1 John 2:1-6 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. (2) He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. (3) And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments. (4) Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him, (5) but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him: (6) whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.
In 1 John 1:5-10, we were urged to walk in the light since the God we serve is the Light. We were reminded that in order to do that we should acknowledge our state of sin before Him and our sins will be cleansed by the blood of Christ if we confess them. In the beginning of chapter 2, John continues with this theme of joining in fellowship with God and walking in His Light.
To know God is to follow his commandments (v3). Genuine repentance (If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness – 1 John 1:9) results in keeping God’s word. We cannot say we know God and yet not keep his commandments (v4). What identifies us as people who know God and His love and who walk in His light is that we keep his commandments. In recent times where it is becoming increasingly unpopular to keep God’s word it is important that we remind ourselves of this. We must walk in the same way in which he walked.
Just when we think the task at hand is too daunting we have to be reminded that we have Jesus Christ. He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. When we fall and fail to keep His commandments the way we should, he is our advocate with the Father. As the modern hymn writers Keith Getty and Stuart Townend put so wonderfully into words:
Because Jesus Christ has died for our sins and advocates for us before the Father, we are able to live a life that glorifies God as we follow his commandments and put sin to death daily in our lives. All Glory, Honour and Praise be to His Holy Name!!!
